Veusz has scatter plots, with optional error bars (of several styles), joining-lines (stepped or beziers curves), fills and transparency, and allows for gaps in data. Veusz can export several vector and bitmap formats, including PNG, EPS, PDF, SVG and EMF. Indeed, Veusz saved documents are simply Python scripts using the same set of commands and are easily modified. However, most of the functionality can also be accessed using a command interface, which can be used from Python command line console window, an embedding Python module or commands sent to it from stdin. The standard way to build up the plot is to use the GUI to add widgets to form a tree, reading data from external files. Veusz builds plots out of widgets, each of which has a set of properties and formatting options which can be modified. Although I initially found the command line interface to be the most important part of a plotting package, since developing Veusz, I now use its GUI almost exclusively as it’s rather powerful and easy to use. I wanted a free, easy to use and powerful package and so I started writing Veusz in 2004. Many were difficult to use, requiring libraries of other peoples’ code or a lot of work going through manuals (e.g. Several were not licensed freely (e.g., sm, idl). Some were fairly easy to use but old fashioned and/or limited (e.g., qdp, sm, grace, gnuplot). As an astronomer, I was dissatisfied with every plotting package I had used. Veusz (pronounced “views”) is a python-based GUI plotting package that I ( Jeremy Sanders) have developed. Jeremy is a postdoc working in the X-Ray Group at the Institute of Astronomy in the University of Cambridge in the UK. Following the step by step interactive tutorial will get you ready to create even the most complex representations, and give them a unique design pattern using the various customization options. This is a guest post by Jeremy Sanders about the plotting package he’s developed. Taking everything into consideration, we can say that Veusz offers a professional approach on graph building. In addition, you can choose to fill areas that are, for example, below or above your line of interest.Īfter you are happy with the graph configuration you can choose to print it out on a sheet of paper, save it as a project for later editing, or export it as some of the most common image file types, in case you need to use it in other applications. The displayed bars and points can be modified to have any color and shape that suits your needs. For the most accurate result, functions are used to define what the end result will look like. They are all stored in the “Editing” window to easily be accessed anytime. Each has its own style of representing the info you input. Create and customize graphsĪ set of widgets is put at your disposal to design your graph. This proves to be helpful seeing how you are given plenty of tools to work with. You will be taken step by step through some of the basics, after which you can start making use of its various functions. If you are new to these kind of utilities you'd best take advantage of the help it has to offer. Interactive tutorial to guide you through Veusz is one of them, and gives you the possibility to create endless types of graphs out of your data. Nothing can offer more accurate results than a computer application.

The outer portion of the dial, below the Romans, is snailed. The “California” style carries over, with Roman numerals on top and broad stick markers below. An oversize “XII” dominates, and does almost as much to identify the manufacturer as the brand name directly beneath it. The unidirectional bezel adjusts in 30-second increments (120 clicks per rotation).Ī slightly domed sapphire crystal with no nonreflective coating protects a dial finished in the Calibre de Cartier style. The edge of the bezel is highly polished, and crenelated for improved grip. The deep gloss gives the watch a top-quality look. It’s black ADLC (amorphous diamond-like carbon) over steel or rose gold, depending on the model. As we’ll discuss below, to those in the know, the simple “diver’s watch” inscription speaks volumes. The case is topped by an eye-catching, compliment-inducing bezel. The solid caseback is held in place with eight small screws. Some may feel the blue jewel is not appropriate for a dive watch, but keep in mind that a Cartier tool is going to be an elegant tool.įrom the earliest days, Cartier’s design brief called for a thin case. The crown’s polished finish and distinctive deep blue synthetic spinel give the watch a dressy demeanor. The smooth, seven-sided crown screws down, contributing to the 300-meter water-resistance rating. Add the crown guard, and the diameter is just over 45 mm. At 43.8 mm, the bezel is larger than the case, making it easier to grip. The case is officially listed at 42 mm in diameter. The oversize crown guard teams up with the bezel to make the watch wear larger than its specs indicate. When a strap is fitted, the screws play only an ornamental role. The screws at the end of each lug help secure the bracelet. This gives the watch a finished look, and it creates the impression that the strap is attached with curved spring bars, which it is not. The lugs are steeply curved and, combined with the rubber strap, make the Calibre Diver very comfortable to wear. On our test watch, this angled lip covers the gap between the strap and the case. Between the lugs, the top of the case band angles out to meet the bracelet’s end pieces. A polished bevel along the outer edges of the lugs catches the light. All its surfaces wear a fine brushed finish. At 111 grams, it’s also light, but as we’ll see, it’s no lightweight. When designing the watch, Cartier prioritized a svelte profile. At 10.92 mm thick in our calipers (and 11 mm officially), the Calibre Diver is slim. Aesthetically, the case is clearly a member of the Calibre de Cartier family. The Cartier Calibre Diver The Cartier Calibre de Cartier Diver’s Lookĭive watches are defined by their cases, so that’s where we will begin. Click here for recently asked questions. Recent studies by the geneticist Rui Martiniano and the archaeologist Claire-Elise Fischer indicate that people living in the most remote and most "Celtic" regions of Ireland and Scotland today have "substantial genetic continuity" with people who lived in those places during the Iron Age, more than 3,000 years ago. Furthermore, thanks to the recent breakthrough in DNA research (by Reich and others), there is strongly contrary genetic evidence, since the modern-day inhabitants of Britain and Ireland "are not closely related to the inhabitants of central Europe," where the Celtic-speaking people who fought Caesar's legions came from. That was the standard narrative for most of the last 200 years, repeated in legends and histories and anthropological dissertations - and it flat-out didn't happen.Īs historian Jennifer Paxton puts it, in a lecture from her series "The Celtic World": "There's a clear lack of evidence in support of a Celtic invasion." She goes on to specify that there's no historical evidence, no linguistic evidence and no archaeological evidence. OK, that might be a bit too simplistic - but we can clearly say that the whole story about a distinctive ethnic or tribal or genetic group called the Celts who rampaged across Europe and into the British Isles during the first millennium B.C. You'll notice I didn't say that Newgrange was built "before the Celts." That's because there never were any "Celts" in the first place. Some of it is just white supremacist garbage. That design is found in exactly one place in Ireland, the impressive prehistoric passage tomb in County Meath called Newgrange, which was built roughly 2,000 years before any tangible evidence had appeared anywhere of the Celtic culture and Celtic languages that had spread across northwestern Europe by Julius Caesar's time. Let's take the ever-popular triple-spiral design motif, identified all over the internet as "Celtic," which is nothing of the kind. Nearly all the Celtomania of the last few decades, unfortunately, amounts to just making stuff up, or to a fantasy-novel mishmash of stuff that doesn't fit together. It's not always easy to tell where one ends and the other begins. But some of it is just white supremacist garbage. I mean, I get it, up to a point: Some of it is about the understandable and maybe even honorable yearning to connect with meaningful cultural traditions from the past, at a historical moment when many people in America and other Western nations (i.e., white folks) feel disconnected and rootless. Step one: Use Morris’s new supernatural powers to enter the memories of those who knew the potential custodian. Morris and Sparky embark on a four-step process to determine the best candidate from several ghostly options. Filling this role will stop the Shelmerston volcano from erupting and destroying everything, and everyone. Reunited in death with his beloved dog Sparky, Morris is tasked with finding a new ghostly custodian for the island. You assume the role of Morris Lupton, recently deceased museum curator from the quaint island settlement of Shelmerston. Those two aspects are key to the gameplay in I Am Dead. They live on in the memories of those that knew them, and artefacts associated with their existence. Instead, the game provides heart-warming reassurance that the departed aren’t really gone. With release 0.5.0, the alchemlyb project adopted NEP 29 to determine which versions of Python and NumPy will be supported. When we release a new major or minor version, alchemlyb will support at least all minor versions of Python introduced and released in the prior 42 months from the release date with a minimum of 2 minor versions of Python, and all minor versions of NumPy released in the prior 24 months from the anticipated release date with a minimum of 3 minor versions of NumPy. Screenshots: Mod Spotlight: According to Hippocrates and subsequent tradition, melancholia was caused by an excess of black bile, hence the name, which means "black bile", from Ancient Greek μέλας ( melas), "dark, black", and χολή ( kholé), "bile" a person whose constitution tended to have a preponderance of black bile had a melancholic disposition. Personality types were similarly determined by the dominant humor in a particular person. The name "melancholia" comes from the old medical belief of the four humours: disease or ailment being caused by an imbalance in one or more of the four basic bodily liquids, or humours. Today, the term "melancholia" and "melancholic" are still used in medical diagnostic classification, such as in ICD-11 and DSM-5, to specify certain features that may be present in major depression.įrontispiece for the 1628 3rd edition of The Anatomy of Melancholy Sigmund Freud, Gordon Parker, Dusan Hadzi-Pavlovic, Michael Alan Taylor, and Max Fink all contributed to defining melancholia in various ways. However, in the 20th century, the term returned as a synonym for depression. Shakespeare's Prince Hamlet epitomized the melancholic man.įrom the 18th to 19th centuries, melancholia became more about abnormal beliefs, losing its connection to depression and affective symptoms. In the visual arts, intellectual melancholy was often depicted in portraiture, while in music, it was associated with composer John Dowland. Notable literary works include Robert Burton's "The Anatomy of Melancholy" (1621), Sir Thomas Browne's "Religio Medici" (1643), and Edward Young's "Night-Thoughts" (1742-1745). This fashionable melancholy became a prominent theme in literature, art, and music of the era. The Encyclopédie of Diderot and d'Alembert also noted that the causes of melancholia were similar to those of mania, including grief, pain, passions, and unsatisfied love and sexual appetites.ĭuring the late 16th and early 17th centuries, a cultural and literary cult of melancholia emerged in England, linked to Neoplatonist and humanist Marsilio Ficino's transformation of melancholia into a mark of genius. Robert Burton's "The Anatomy of Melancholy" (1621) provided an extensive analysis of the subject from both literary and medical perspectives, suggesting music and dance as critical treatments for mental illness. Painters like Albrecht Dürer depicted melancholia in their work, with Dürer's famous engraving "Melencolia I" interpreted as a portrayal of waiting for inspiration. In the Middle Ages, the understanding of melancholia shifted to a religious perspective, with sadness seen as a vice and demonic possession as a potential cause of the disease. The 10th-century Persian physician Al-Akhawayni Bokhari described melancholia as a chronic illness caused by the impact of black bile on the brain, with symptoms such as unexplained fear and inability to answer questions. In ancient Rome, Galen added "fixed delusions" to the list of symptoms and believed that melancholia could cause cancer. Hippocrates and other ancient physicians described melancholia as a distinct disease with mental and physical symptoms, including persistent fears and despondencies, poor appetite, abulia, sleeplessness, irritability, and agitation. The term "melancholia" originated from the ancient medical belief of the four humours, with melancholia being caused by an excess of black bile. Related terms used in historical medicine include lugubriousness (from Latin lugere: "to mourn"), moroseness (from Latin morosus: "self-will or fastidious habit"), wistfulness (from a blend of "wishful" and the obsolete English wistly, meaning "intently"), and saturnineness (from Latin Saturninus: "of the planet Saturn). Until the 18th century, doctors and other scholars classified melancholic conditions as such by their perceived common cause – an excess of a notional fluid known as "black bile", which was commonly linked to the spleen.īetween the late 18th and late 19th centuries, melancholia was a common medical diagnosis, and modern concepts of depression as a mood disorder eventually arose from this historical context. Melancholy was regarded as one of the four temperaments matching the four humours. Melancholia or melancholy (from Greek: µέλαινα χολή melaina chole, meaning black bile) is a concept found throughout ancient, medieval and premodern medicine in Europe that describes a condition characterized by markedly depressed mood, bodily complaints, and sometimes hallucinations and delusions. A man whose face exemplifies the melancholic temperament (1789) “California GDP being pretty big doesn’t mean that your median in California is necessarily better off,” Zeke said. It fails to take into consideration important factors such as housing affordability, income inequality, cost of living and wealth distribution, all key areas in which California has continued to struggle, making it difficult for middle- and low-income families to thrive in many parts of the state, according to economic experts. Gavin Newsom quickly touted the prediction as a sign of California’s prosperity, some experts note the metric is just one measure of California’s economy. “Everybody was focusing on the California exoduses, the wildfires, the earthquakes and everything that was negative going on, but I don’t think anybody was paying attention to the growth.”Īlthough Gov. “I think this was the best kept secret,” Cornelius said. The piece analyzed California’s and Germany’s past and projected gross domestic product, which in 2021 measured $3.4 trillion and $4.2 trillion, respectively. But some economic experts say the expected bump may have more to do with Germany’s struggling economy and the falling value of the euro than California’s growth. Moving from the world’s fifth- to fourth-largest economy would be another step up for California - which would trail only the U.S., China and Japan.
